Day 2 - Shopping and Food

Lets start with the most important- the food. I even have a couple of recipes. Last time I posted too much masala for the chicken curry. I'll try not to do it again.

You'll never actually understand the full impact India had on the rest of the world, when sojourners would scout new routes to the spice headquarters, until you visit shops like this.

It is amazing.
We were here last time- and it was definitely a "2 do" this time.
I want to decorate like this, I would never find the spices though. I'd have to fill the containers with "Captain Crunch" or something.

Chicken for dinner.

A totally disturbing experience. I had to walk away.
It wasn't so much knowing what was happening, it was hearing "squawk, squawk, squawk...... ." John said, "Somebody is going to do it whether or not you're present." I'd rather live in a bubble, thanks.

You may remember pictures of these ladies last time. They remembered us and took a liking to our new addition.

This is the front of my favorite store. I couldn't take anymore pictures, I was in such a frenzy. I will say that I got most of my Christmas shopping done and bought gifts for some people who requested pajamas, etc. I'm posting a few pictures of the types of things you can get. The prices are amazing, you just have to come with an empty suit case.

Ornaments
Table runners
Wrap Around Skirt
Pillow covers
Sheet I plan to make into a quilt.

We've gotten pictures in the past, Batik paintings, etc. My house definitely has an India feel. I wouldn't have it any other way. The only thing I would add is more mats, like the one Keane is sitting on in the previous post, especially now that he is on the verge of crawling.

Here are a couple recipes, if you want more, let me know. I'll write the other dishes that I have the recipes for.

Fried Bananas

Equal parts white flour and rice flour. I would start with 3/4 cup of each or something like that.
dash of sugar
dash of salt

Cut bananas in half (not length wise), then cut the halves into strips lengthwise.

Finish the batter by adding water.

Coat the bananas, then fry. It doesn't have to be a ton of oil. Mama had a wok that she put oil in, then she dropped in the bananas when it was hot and put them right next to each other. Turned the whole clump over once and then out they came, then did it again.

The rice flour makes it crispy.

Fish Rub

For any kind of fish. It's better with the skin left on.

Salt, Pepper, Chili powder, vinegar (make a paste)- rub it on both sides of the fish and fry the fish in a little oil.

Some other recipes are...
Chicken Curry
Red Fish Curry
Fried Beans and Carrot
Spiced Buttermilk
Dahl Curry (Lentils- very good)

These are all Mama John's recipes.
